Bordeaux wines - the official classifications

For obvious commercial reasons, many French wine corporations have expressed the need to put systems in place that are used to rate the quality of the producers within a guaranteed vintage areas (appellations). Therefore several official classifications were progressively published over time. Such rankings were initially meant to better define the intrinsic value of the wineries. If a number of historical classifications such as the famous Medoc Classified Growths classification or the Sauternes-Barsac classification which were both implemented more than 150 years ago in 1855, others rankings were drawn up more recently, i.e. the 1959 Graves, Pessac-Léognan Classification. On the other hand, the Classified Growths of Saint-Emilion, the Crus Bourgois Classification and the so called Crus Artisans Classification are all regularly reassessed and probably reflect to the consumer a more accurate image. It should also be noted that the prestigious Pomerol area has never been subject to any official tentative classification.
